Who knows and uses petitions to the German Bundestag? Results of a representative survey
»Everyone« has the right under Article 17 of the Basic Law to address petitions or complaints to the German Bundestag. In 2019 alone, approximately 13,500 petitions were addressed to the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag. They concerned both personal concerns and fundamental concerns of general interest. The »Bundestag petition« offers the guarantee that every concern is examined and decided.
But who knows about and uses petitions to the German Bundestag? And how did people learn about the right to petition? TAB Sensor No. 3 approaches these core questions from the perspective of internet users resident in Germany. The new TAB-Sensor also reports on the awareness of extra-parliamentary petition or campaign portals among the population.
The nationwide representative survey is one component of the TAB study on »Petitions to the German Bundestag - Awareness and Use«, which will be published shortly as TAB-Hintergrundpapier Nr. 25.
The TAB-Sensor series presents social perceptions, evaluations and views on issues of scientific and technological change. It is based on empirical surveys of societal stakeholders that are developed and evaluated according to scientific standards. (available only in German)
